How to Build a Personal RAG System for Your Notes

Feed it a fresh context window and it will help you brilliantly — but close the chat, open a new one, and it's gone back to knowing nothing about your projects, your decisions, or the patterns you've spent years building. Every conversation starts from zero. This is the problem RAG was designed to solve, and building a personal version for your own notes is more approachable than it sounds.
RAG stands for Retrieval-Augmented Generation. The idea is simple: before the model answers your question, the system searches a library of text, finds the most relevant passages, and slips them into the prompt. The model reads your notes, then responds. You keep your knowledge in plain text; the AI learns to use it.
This post walks you through building a personal RAG pipeline from scratch — one that searches your own notes, docs, and code snippets. No expensive infrastructure required.
Why personal RAG is worth the effort
The standard objection is: "Why not just paste the relevant note into the chat?" You can, and for a single note it works fine. But the value of a RAG system compounds as your library grows. When you have hundreds of notes — meeting summaries, design decisions, code explanations, research — you can't manually curate what's relevant every time. A retrieval layer does that for you automatically.
There's also the question of quality. A model that's reading your words, in your voice, gives answers that feel grounded rather than generic. It can reference the decision you made two months ago, the pattern you documented last week, the constraint you noted in passing. That's a qualitatively different kind of AI assistance — closer to using AI as a true thought partner than pointing a generic assistant at the internet and hoping it guesses your context.

The four-step pipeline
A RAG system has four moving parts, and once you see them laid out, the whole thing demystifies quickly:
1. Chunk — Split your notes into smaller passages, typically a few hundred words each. Chunking matters because embedding models work better on focused excerpts than on full documents, and because you want to retrieve a precise paragraph, not a ten-page file.
2. Embed — Run each chunk through an embedding model to produce a vector — a list of numbers that encodes the semantic meaning of that passage. Similar passages will have similar vectors. The model makes similarity precise and searchable.
3. Store — Save the vectors and the original text in a vector database. For a personal setup, local options like Chroma or SQLite with the sqlite-vec extension work great. You don't need cloud infrastructure.
4. Retrieve — At query time, embed the user's question the same way, then find the stored chunks whose vectors are closest. Pass those chunks to the model as context alongside the question.
That's it. The pipeline is genuinely that linear.
Building your first personal RAG in 30 minutes
Here's a minimal working version in Python. It uses chromadb for vector storage and Anthropic's API for generation:

This is deliberately minimal. Chroma handles the embedding internally using a bundled model; you just add documents and query. A production-ready version would add smarter chunking (respecting heading boundaries), richer metadata (file path, creation date, tags), and more careful context assembly. But this version runs, and running is what matters first.
What to include — and what to leave out
Not every note belongs in your RAG index. The best candidates are:
- Decisions and rationale — "Why we chose X over Y." These save you from re-litigating old debates with yourself or your team.
- Your own technical explanations — Notes written in your words, for your context. More useful than documentation because they already match how you think.
- Meeting summaries and action items — Great for "what did we agree on?" queries.
- Reusable code patterns and snippets — Reference implementations you return to.
Leave out ephemeral to-do lists, half-formed drafts with no conclusions, and anything so context-dependent it would only confuse a retrieval. Signal beats volume every time.
Keeping the index fresh
A stale index is worse than no index — you'll start getting confidently wrong answers. Set up a script that re-indexes whenever files change. Most vector databases support upsert, so you only process what's new or modified. A simple cron job or a file-watcher hook works well here.
Connecting it to your actual workflow
The most important integration point is wherever you already live. For most developers that's the terminal or their editor. You can expose your RAG system as a CLI tool:
